World Cup Barbecues

Barbecue FootballWhen World Cup fever starts to grip the world, or those parts of it civilised enough to enjoy kicking a ball round for an hour and a half, why not make a real event of your favourite match and combine it with a pleasant informal tea dance, or, and this is just a wild alternative, a barbecue!!

The World Cup and barbecues go together really well, both being at their best when shared with a group of friends, informal, conducive to a few beers and not at their best during heavy rain. Those who like football can super-glue themselves to the box and hang on every kick, header or Argentinean elbow. The rest can enjoy a pleasant and extended garden BBQ party away from the somewhat colourful expressions of concern about the skills of our gallant footballing chaps.

To make sure that your World Cup Barbecue Extravaganza goes with the swing that it should, and maybe even a small slide and climbing frame, it's worth thinking a few things through before hand:

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that England may lose an occasional match. Try to have the main Barbecue part of the event in advance of the match. This is especially important for those of you across the Irish Sea, just ask the Scots ;)

Serving food during the match itself will either not be welcomed or result in a major job for the vacuum cleaned later on. Half time is a different matter. Small snacks, like skewered meat and vegetable should go down well and sliced oranges are a tradition that can't be avoided.

Your kids will be inspired. They will store enough energy during the match to power a small American town or most of Western Europe. This energy will be released in a game of football in the garden. Protect your barbecue! Melted football is not a widely admired flavouring and resists even the most dedicated flossing. Don't even try to hide the football. There will be one in someone's car boot or failing that the closest thing to a ball will be booted around the garden.

A themed barbecue party can be one of the best you have ever organised and who knows, we may even make it to the next round and you can make it a regular event.
